Marginalia is a space for the intellectually curious — people who read not just to absorb, but to start a conversation. We believe the best ideas aren't found in the headlines. They're hiding in the questions, the contradictions, and the small, quiet thoughts you jot down in the margins.

Our goal is to challenge the main story, question what everyone takes for granted, and uncover the gems that others miss. Think of this as your invitation to pull up a chair and write in the margins with us.

What you'll find here

Longer essays that resist the hot take. Some technical, some personal, all written with the assumption that you have a quiet hour to read them. We're not interested in being first to a story; we're interested in being the ones still worth reading when the story is over. Expect detours into software, design, books, attention, and the strange places where those subjects overlap with the rest of life.

We publish when there's something worth saying, not on a schedule. TheRSS feed is the most reliable way to know when something new is up — no algorithms, no inbox weight, just the words when they're ready.

The margins, explained

The name comes from the practice of writing in the margins of books — the small, sometimes illegible notes a reader leaves for themselves when a sentence lands and they don't want to forget it. Marginalia are the part of a book that wasn't written by the author, but that the book wouldn't be the same without. That's what we're after: not the polished argument, but the question that opened it up.
